Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath

Highlights: dense forests, waterfalls, picturesque bridges, wild animals and historical buildings

Not to be missed: the breathtaking colorful leaves in autumn

Rental bikes: In addition to the two official partners Boathouse at Fletcher's Cove and Thompson Boat Center, you will also find numerous other independent outfitters on site. In Potomac, Maryland, bikes can even be borrowed for free for two hours on weekends and public holidays.

Great Allegheny Passage

If you haven't run out of steam after 300 km on the C&O, you can seamlessly drive up the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) in the direction of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in Cumberland, Maryland. The cycle and pedestrian friendly route is secured with limestone chippings and follows the course of disused railway lines.

Length: 241 km

Access points: There are dozens of short and long-term parking spaces between Cumberland and Pittsburgh.

Highlights: Mountains on the horizon, old railway lines, rushing rivers, the Eastern Continental Divide, the historic Mason-Dixon Line and picturesque towns

Not to be missed: the 1 km Big Savage Tunnel, at the southern end of which a spectacular panorama awaits you (April to November)
