Bei einem Ausflug in die Berge der Region können sich Urlauber auf Abenteuer und Erholung gleichermassen freuen.

Wandern auf dem Appalachian Trail

Der Appalachian National Scenic Trail erstreckt sich über 3.510 Kilometer von Maine bis nach Georgia. Etwa 590 Kilometer des Wanderweges befinden sich in den herrlichen Appalachen von Virginia und Maryland. Besucher aller Altersklassen und Fitnessstufen können sich hier an kurzen Spaziergängen, Tageswanderungen und mehrtägigen Rucksack-Touren erfreuen. Der Wanderweg bietet viele Möglichkeiten, spektakuläre Aussichten sowie die Flora und Fauna zu genießen – ein Abenteuer zum Entdecken, Erkunden und Entspannen.

Fahrt über die Panoramastrassen Blue Ridge Parkway & Skyline Drive

Der Skyline Drive, der zum Shenandoah National Park gehört, verläuft über eine Strecke von fast 170 Kilometern entlang des Bergrückens der Blue Ridge Mountains, bis er auf den Blue Ridge Parkway trifft. Von dort aus setzt sich diese Panoramastraße, die häufig zu einer der beliebtesten Ferienstraßen („America’s Favourite Drive“) gewählt wird, weitere 755 Kilometer entlang der Berge im Süden von Virginia bis nach North Carolina fort. Entlang der Strecke gibt es verschiedene Haltebuchten, die herrliche Aussichten bieten, interessante Campingplätze und Wanderwege sowie nahegelegene Städte, die einen Besuch wert sind.

Radwanderung über die Great Allegheny Passage

Die über eine ehemalige Zugstrecke führende Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) bietet einen ca. 240 Kilometer langen fast komplett flachen Wander-und Radweg zwischen Cumberland (Maryland) und Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). Der Weg führt an Flüssen vorbei und durch schattige Täler sowie kleine Städte. In Cumberland stößt die GAP auf den Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, wodurch ein durchgehender 540 Kilometer langer Weg entsteht, der bis nach Washington, DC führt.

Städte in den Bergen erkunden

In den Tälern der Appalachen bieten die Städte Cumberland (Maryland) und Roanoke (Virginia) malerische Blicke auf die Bergwelt und einfachen Zugang zu verschiedenen Freizeitaktivitäten im Freien. Hier haben Sie die Möglichkeit, mehr über die von der Eisenbahn geprägte Geschichte der beiden Städte zu erfahren, die lebendige Kunstszene zu entdecken, lokale Speisen und Weine zu genießen und in außergewöhnlichen Boutiquen zu shoppen.

Nasses Vergnügen am Deep Creek Lake

Mit einer Uferlinie von fast 105 Kilometern Länge ist der Deep Creek Lake der größte Süßwassersee in Maryland. Dieses Erholungsgebiet bietet zu allen Jahreszeiten unzählige Möglichkeiten für Freizeitaktivitäten, z. B. Angeln, Boot fahren, Schwimmen, Wasserski, Wandern und Golf. Wildwasserenthusiasten werden vom Adventure Sports Center International, der einzigen auf einer Bergspitze liegenden Wildwasserstrecke der Welt, begeistert sein.
